Cleveland Classic 290 Driver Classic Styling Takes You Back. Ultralite Technology Moves You Forward. Classic looks, yes, but distance like you've never seen before, thanks to the largest and deepest club face ever produced by Cleveland Golf. Pair that with the easily-generated increases in swing speed driven by Ultralite Technology and you have a driver that's no throwback but, instead, will push your ball farther than you thought possible. Which is likely why it won 2012 Golf Digest Hot List Gold in the driver category. The Classic 290 Driver, along with its stable mates, the 270 and the Tour, is among the lightest drivers on the market (hint: 290 gram clubweight for the Classic 290), helping players generate measurable increases in swing speed for more distance with the same swing effort. You can put a 48" shaft in any club you want as long as the tip diameter on the shaft is correct.

I doubt that you can. I always lengthen my driver shafts to 48". However, with this club you will have some problems as the shaft has an unusually large butt diameter. Normal extenders for .600 shafts will fall down the shaft.

I used a 5/8th wooden dowel which I slightly rasped by, perhaps, 1/32nd to just fit. If you do this, be certain to round or radius the end that goes into the shaft so as to not leave a sharp edge which can cause the shaft to break. Also, lightly sand the inside of the shaft to remove the residual "bond-breaker" or release agent left over from the manufacturing of the shaft.

Unless you are very skilled and removed the original grip in one piece, this leaves you with finding a grip to fit such a large butt. Cleveland uses a .630 grip, which I could not find at my usual suppliers. I ended up using a Callaway grip of .610 and stretching it down the shaft during the installation so as to reduce its finished diameter to standard size.
